Chicago State University is getting a whole new slate of leaders.

The school has struggled financially for the last few years due in part to the state's budget impasse.
The majority of the South Side university's students are African-Americans.

Paul Vallas - who used to lead Chicago Public Schools - has been appointed to be on the university's board of trustees.

"Our objective is to not only preserve Chicago State but to help transform it into the dynamic university that the community needs."

Vallas was appointed to Chicago State's board by Governor Bruce Rauner.

Vallas campaigned against Rauner two years ago as the lieutenant governor candidate on the ticket with Pat Quinn.
