The southern Illinois community stepped up Tuesday to help those who served our country.
Marion VA Health Care for Homeless Veterans hosted its 7th annual Veteran Stand Down at the Black Diamond Harley Davidson warehouse.
Marion VA Medical Center public affairs director Beth Lamb says the event is designed to help veterans in need, some of whom may be homeless.
"Sort of a way to replenish, get new supplies, get prepared before colder weather gets here, grab a warm meal, maybe visit with other veterans, an opportunity to sign up for VA benefits if they haven't and also meet with other community agencies."
Veteran Chris Malone of Centralia says he makes sure not to miss this event.
"I go to this Stand Down every year. It's a really good event. I get socks and hats and stuff to kind of supplement my income, because I'm on a really limited income. My buddy here, Carl, his house burned down this year and he walked out in bare feet. He had absolutely nothing. So, it's a big help to a lot of veterans."
The St. Louis Area Food Bank also gave away two tons of food. The food bank's agency relations coordinator Kelly Hall says they do this every month in their 26-county service area, but only twice a year for veterans. She says this event is extra special.
"They've served our country and so we want to give them the opportunity, give back to them, and say a big thank you for everything they've done for us."
Veteran Pete Long was in line for the food supplies. He says former service members deserve a day like this.
"Well, I gave Uncle Sam ten years, and I just figured it wouldn't hurt him to give back a little bit."
The Marion VA says Tuesday's Stand Down served 135 veterans...below the average of around 200. VA officials say hopefully that's good news and that fewer veterans are in need.
