National Weather Service Opens Doors to the Public

The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky is inviting the public to visit its operation during a special open house.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin says this is their first open house since the late 1990's. He says they felt it was time to let the public see their new technology, such as improvements to the Doppler radar and computer software.

Shanklin says they will offer 20-25 minute tours of the facility all day Saturday. He says it will be a unique opportunity to peek inside the National Weather Service, where all of the region's forecasts, warnings, hydrological and climatological data originate.

Shanklin says area residents are very interested in the weather because we receive such a wide range of weather events.

Shanklin says there will also be outdoor exhibits that will include a mobile command center and a tornado
machine. He says people will also be on hand to program weather radios.

The National Weather Service Open House is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 20. The facility is located on Hinkleville Road west of Paducah.
