A headstone rests on the ground after a car collided with it during a police chase Tuesday

Herrin Police say a man is in custody, after he tried to get away from a traffic stop by speeding through a cemetery.
Officers say 37-year old Darian Richardson of Murphysboro was observed speeding on Stotlar Road Tuesday just before noon, and when a patrolman tried to pull him over, he turned into Herrin City Cemetery to get away.

The patrolman had just finished escorting a funeral procession into the cemetery, and Richardson's path was blocked by the cars. Police say Richardson drove his car over several graves, hitting at least three headstones before the vehicle got stuck.

Richardson was booked on charges of speeding, illegal transportation of alcohol, aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer, criminal damage to property, and criminal damage to government-supported property. A court date has not yet been set.
