Mount Vernon's outgoing mayor says she's proud of the work she's done, and excited for the future of her community.
At the annual "State of the City" address, Mayor Mary Jane Chesley pointed to lower unemployment rates, infrastructure improvements, and other bright points as accomplishments during her time as mayor.
Chesley says hard work and cooperation have brought the Jefferson County community to where it is now. She says a look at the last six years shows tremendous growth.
"Terrific numbers! And that shows that what we have done since 2009 is right. Don't let it stop!"
Chesley highlighted job growth, infrastructure improvements, and additional businesses during her time in office. She says while it's nice to have been Mayor during that time, she shares credit for those successes with the community.
"What we have done in six years, ladies and gentleman, is an accomplishment that I have not seen in any other municipality. And that took teamwork, so I appreciate all that you have done."
Chesley, who's not seeking another term in office, says there is more work to be done, but says she hopes she's left Mount Vernon in good shape for the city's next leader.
