Southern Illinois is getting $2.2 million in additional federal funding to help with recovery from storms and flooding in April and May of last year. The money awarded Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Labor will be used to hire more temporary workers for cleanup and restoration and help them find permanent work afterward. The new funding is on top of $2 million the Labor Department awarded in June 2011 for a first round of temporary jobs. The grant money will go to 21 southern counties.
Last year's spring storms and flooding along the Ohio River and its tributaries forced the evacuation of some southern Illinois towns.
