Memorial Planned to Remember Varughese

This week marks the first anniversary of the disappearance and death of former SIUC student Pravin Varughese.

The family is holding a remembrance Friday.

Pravin's mother, Lovely, says they will walk to the spot where her son's body was found in a wooded area on the east side of Carbondale.  She says she is dreading the moment - but says it's very important.

"We went there on February 19th - the day after they found Pravin. And every time after that, when we came down to Carbondale, we tried to go in there and we couldn't because we don't know how to get in there, with the thickness of it, we just couldn't get in there. I want to go there, sit there for a few minutes. I want to touch that floor where he was found."

No criminal charges have been filed in the case.  Varughese says she hopes one day to find justice for her son.

"We have taken his case to another level, to make the public aware that when something like this happens, it's OK to ask questions. It's OK to go after your guts."

The family has filed a civil lawsuit against the City of Carbondale and its former police chief as well as the individual believed to have been with Pravin prior to his disappearance.

The SIU student was last seen on February 12th, 2014 at a house party in Carbondale.  His body was found five days later.

The suit is scheduled for a review on March 9th in Jackson County Circuit court.
