“American Denial” To Address Unconscious Bias
Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, camera crews, and photographers are invited to cover a free screening and discussion of the PBS Independent Lens film, American Denial, on Saturday, March 7 at 1:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main.
WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale Public Library are presenting the film as part of WSIU's participation in Community Cinema, a community engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and Independent Lens designed to ignite conversations about key issues and to inspire real and lasting change.
Father Joseph Brown, a professor in SIU Carbondale's Africana Studies Department, and Cathy Field of the Carbondale Racial Justice Coalition will moderate an in-depth discussion after the film.
American Denial uses the story of Gunnar Myrdal's 1944 landmark study of Jim Crow racism as a springboard to explore the power of unconscious biases and how the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice still affect notions of race and class today.
WSIU's remaining Community Cinema schedule is as follows: The Homestretch on March 21 and Limited Partnership on April 18. Find out more at http://www.wsiu.org/community-cinema.
Questions should be directed to Kate West, Community Cinema Coordinator and WSIU Graduate Assistant, SIU Carbondale College of Mass Communications and Media Arts, at (618) 453-5060 or kate.west@wsiu.org.
