Take A Digital Hike Digital Media Workshop, Outdoor Hike

Free Family Event is Saturday, October 4

Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, camera crews, and photographers are invited to cover the free local family event “Take A Digital Hike” on Saturday, October 4 beginning at 9am in the SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA) New Media Lab in Room 9E in the basement of the Communications Building, 1100 Lincoln Drive in Carbondale.

Hosted by WSIU Public Broadcasting and the SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA), the event for children ages 6-10 and their families will include a digital media workshop based on the PBS KIDS environmental science project Plum Landing, followed by a guided hike around SIU Campus Lake led by a representative of the Shawnee National Forest.

Event Agenda

9-9:20am:   Introduction and Welcome (WSIU), MCMA New Media Lab, Room 9E, basement of Communications Building. Watch short Plum Landing video and introduce Plum Landing website and Plum Landing Photo Hunt phone app. Children and families will use the app to upload event photos to the website.

9:20-9:50am: Explore Plum Landing website

9:50-10am: Distribute nature journals, pencils, and Biodiversity Bingo game

10-10:15am: Nature Journaling introduction

10:15-11:45am: Campus Lake nature walk and play Biodiversity Bingo

11:45am-Noon: Wrap-up and return to Communications Building
