First BMI Critical Lens Screening Coming September 9
Film and Discussion to Focus on Student Loan Crisis
Carbondale, Ill. – Reporters, photographers, and camera crews are invited to cover the first film screening and discussion in the BMI Critical Lens Series, presented by The Center for Inclusive Excellence, a unit of the Dean of Students at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale, the Black Male Initiative (BMI), and Progressive Masculinities Mentors, with support from WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media arm of SIU.
Default: The Student Loan Documentary is the first film in the series, scheduled for this Monday, September 9 from 5:30-7pm at the SIU Morris Library Auditorium, 605 Agriculture Drive in Carbondale, Ill. This film chronicles the stories of student borrowers who find themselves in the paralyzing predicament of having to repay far more than what they borrowed, with no bankruptcy protection and no recourse under the law.
The BMI Critical Lens Series will feature documentary and film works that explore a wide range of social issues and topics. The overall goal of the project is to expose students and guests to the important issues of our time and to provide an atmosphere in which they can think, share, and discuss these issues critically. All film screenings will be held at the SIU Morris Library Auditorium.
Upcoming screenings include Independent Lens: The Invisible War on Monday, October 7 from 5:30-7pm and Independent Lens: Soul Food Junkies on Monday, November 4 from 5:30-7pm
