Marion, Centralia High School Kick Off New Season of Scholastic Hi-Q

Carbondale, Ill. -- WSIU Public Television, a public media service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will kick off a new season of its competitive game show series Scholastic Hi-Q with a match between top students from Marion High School and Centralia High School on Sunday, October 4 at 5pm on WSIU-TV 8 and WUSI-TV 16. The series will air Sunday at 5pm, with a repeat each following Sunday at 9:30am, through May 2016.

Produced and hosted by SIU Carbondale students, Scholastic Hi-Q showcases scholar bowl teams from over 30 regional high schools. Team members answer questions from a variety of disciplines, including art, science, math, literature, history, music, and pop culture. The winning school of each game advances to subsequent rounds until they are either eliminated by another team or advance to the championship match. Season champions receive a large plaque for their school and recognition on WSIU-TV's airwaves and website.

Scholastic Hi-Q helps participating teams strengthen problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, while also reinforcing life lessons in responsibility and teamwork. SIU Carbondale students working in front of and behind the scenes gain knowledge about all aspects of the broadcast industry, a key feature of the SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts' emphasis on academics combined with real-world experience.

Zach Barrett, a junior in Radio, Television, & Digital Media from Bourbonnais, Illinois, is the new host of Scholastic Hi-Q. Learn more about the series at wsiu.org/hiq and stay up-to-date on the broadcast schedule at facebook.com/scholastichiq and facebook.com/wsiutv.
