Man Killed After Armed Standoff in Marion

A Marion man is dead after an armed standoff with police Tuesday morning.

Illinois State Police say 27-year old Joshua Green was killed after he shot at officers after a four-hour standoff. A female hostage was also shot during the incident, and was airlifted to a trauma center out of state.

The incident began around 3:30am, when police noticed gloves and ammunition in a car while on a routine patrol, and later heard a woman screaming. Investigators say Green shot at those officers as they were looking for the woman.

While investigating the reports of the female screaming that he heard, the officers were fired upon by a suspect. At that point, a hostage situation began. The neighborhood was evacuated, streets were closed. - ISP Lt. William Sons

After four hours of negotiations, Green came out of the home on West Main Street with the woman, but refused to surrender. State Police say he was hiding a gun, and when he began shooting at them, officers returned fire and killed him.

The investigation is still going on. Williamson County State’s Attorney Brandon Zanotti confirms Green did have a criminal record, and was on parole on a residential burglary conviction.

PREVIOUS: An armed standoff is closing some roads and one school in Marion this morning.

Marion Junior High is closed today, and police are asking people to avoid the area around Russell and Main Streets this morning, as they're dealing with an armed subject who's barricaded inside a home.

Police say it's an ongoing investigation, and they don't have much information to release at this time, but they're asking people to stay away while they continue to work the scene.

Marion Unit Two schools were contacted - police say they wanted to let administrators know of the situation because of how close it is to Marion Junior High. While MJHS is closed, other schools in Unit 2 will be open today.
