Longtime Southern Illinois Broadcaster Dies

The visitation is today for a long-time southern Illinois broadcaster.

Russ Withers, the founder of Withers Broadcasting, passed away Friday in Mt. Vernon at the age of 77.

Withers, a native of Cape Girardeau, owned and operated six TV stations and 30-radio stations in seven states including ones in Marion, Mt. Vernon and Centralia. Withers was also a past president of the National Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors.

His Visitation is tonight at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon from 5pm until 8pm.  The funeral service for Withers is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10:00 am at the funeral home.

A scholarship fund has been established in Withers' name at Southern Illinois University.
