Local Families Invited to Free Digital Media Workshop, Nature Hike

WSIU to Host Digital Media Workshop, Nature Hike, Free Family Event Scheduled for Saturday, October 4

Carbondale, Ill. – WSIU Public Broadcasting and the SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA) invite area families and children ages 6-10 to participate in “Take A Digital Hike”, a free digital media workshop based on the PBS KIDS online environmental science project Plum Landing, followed by a guided hike around Campus Lake, on Saturday, October 4.

The event will kick off at 9am with a digital media workshop in the MCMA New Media Lab in Room 9E in the basement of the Communications Building, located at 1100 Lincoln Drive in Carbondale, Illinois. Following the workshop, a representative from the Shawnee National Forest will lead a hike around Campus Lake.

Guests are asked to bring their phones and cameras to take photos during the media workshop and hike, so they can share their experiences on the Plum Landing website and with children around the U.S. WSIU will provide nature journals, pencils, and maps.

Space is limited to 30 children and their family members. Families interested in participating are asked to RSVP by Friday, October 3 at (618) 534-3708 or outreach@wsiu.org.

Plum Landing is an online environmental science project from PBS KIDS designed to help elementary school students to develop a love for and connection to the Earth. Games, apps, videos, and hands-on activities are available on the project website at pbskids.org/plumlanding.
