Local Event to Explore Latino Experience in Southern Illinois

Carbondale, ILWSIU Public Broadcasting, a public media service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will join Illinois Humanities, the Illinois Migrant Council’s Technology Learning Center in Cobden, and the Carbondale Public Library for a free film screening and discussion of the Latino experience in our region. Entitled Pride, Prejudice, and the Latino Experience in Southern Illinois, the event will be held Tuesday, November 10 at 6pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main in Carbondale.

Jeff Williams, Associate Director for Radio at WSIU Public Broadcasting, will moderate the event, which will feature a screening of the film Prejudice and Pride (1965-1980), the fifth episode of the PBS documentary series Latino Americans, followed by a panel discussion. The film addresses the farmworker movement led by César Chavez and Dolores Huerta, the socially influential plays, poetry, and films of Luis Valdez and Corky Gonzalez, and Sal Castro’s pursuit of equality in public education, among other topics.

Discussion panelists will include René Francisco Poitevin, Coordinator of the Hispanic/Latino Resource Center at SIU Carbondale; Bridget Phillips, Coordinator of the Illinois Migrant Council’s Technology Learning Center in Cobden; Jane Adams, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at SIU Carbondale and local civic leader; and Juana Duran, a recent graduate of SIU Carbondale and former migrant farmworker.

Audience participation in the discussion is encouraged. Spanish language interpretation will be provided. Anyone who will require a sign interpreter or other arrangements in order to participate fully should contact Matt Meacham, Program Coordinator of Access for Illinois Humanities, at matt.meacham@ilhumanities.org or (312) 422-5589, at least 72 hours in advance of the program.

Pride, Prejudice, and the Latino Experience in Southern Illinois will be part of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a series of programs conducted statewide by Illinois Humanities with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
