Jackson Co States Attorney Explains Actions in Young Case

The Jackson County State's Attorney addressed the media Monday about why homicide charges have not been issued in the 2012 death of a Carbondale woman.
State's Attorney Mike Carr says he felt he needed to make some remarks about the case of Molly Young because of recent national media attention led by Young's father, Larry, who is critical of how local authorities have handled the investigation. Young was found shot to death in March 2012 in the apartment of her ex-boyfriend, then Carbondale Police dispatcher, Richie Minton.  Carr says the evidence he has seen so far leads him to believe there is not sufficient, admissible evidence to prosecute the case as a murder.  He says there was evidence at a coroner's inquest that would suggest the death may have been a suicide.  Carr says a suicide note, in Young's handwriting, was found on the floor of her room at her grandmother's house.  Carr says there were individual notes addressed to various family members and friends.

Carr says there was also a detailed journal found in Young's bedroom describing her desire to end her life and text messages describing a failed attempt to kill herself by overdose days before her death. There have been questions about potential mishandling of evidence in the case. Carr said he has not found evidence to suggest there was a cover-up.  Carr says he has not ruled the death a suicide, and the case remains open. He says he would welcome any new information in the case.

Young's family was not at Monday's news conference. A family representative said Molly's father, Larry, would review Carr's statement and comment on them at a later date.
