Jackson Co. K-9 Officer Receives Protective Vest

At the Jackson County Sheriff's office, a certain officer will get some new equipment. But, it's not just any officer ... and it's not just any equipment. Labrador retriever and K-9 officer Gunner will soon receive his own bullet and stab protective vest.

But the vest is sponsored by someone special -the James Brockmeyer Memorial fund. Which is from the family of Chester police officer James Brockmeyer - who died in a car wreck while on duty last fall.
Corporal Ronald Stanton says the sponsorship comes because Gunner's handler, Deputy Brandon Crain, was good friends with Brockmeyer before he died.

"So they were pretty good friends when they were at Chester together, and also Brockmeyer was a groomsman in Deputy Crain's wedding a handful of weeks before that crash."

Stanton also says Crain is excited to receive the vest, for the sake of his K-9 - and also his friend.

"It's kind of - not just a tribute to officer Brockmeyer, but also to Deputy Crain - in memory of his friend."
Each vest is custom made, and they expect it to come in within the next eight weeks.

The embroidered vest will say - "In loving memory of Officer James Brockmeyer."
