IL 2nd Most Corrupt State

Illinois is the second most corrupt state according to a report released Wednesday by the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the IGPA conducted the review. The report says there have been over 15-hundred corruption convictions in the federal district dominated by Chicago from 1976 to 2010.  Illinois is known for its history of corrupt public officials, but author of the report Jim Nowlan says the problem comes from a variety of government workers.  He says there are a lot of convictions of federal postal employees who take mail and use it for their own purposes. That seems to be one of the largest, but Nowlan also notes that four of the past seven governors have been convicted of crimes along with 31-aldermen in
the City of Chicago.

The report puts Illinois in second place for states with the most corruption convictions per capita. Louisiana is number one. New York and Pennsylvania follow. However, researchers also considered the corruption convictions per capita for Washington D.C. The nation's capital outranked all states in that ranking.
