The City of Herrin has a new mayor.
Alderman Steve Frattini was elected acting mayor by his city council colleagues Monday night.
Frattini fills the vacancy left by the resignation ten days ago by Mayor Vic Ritter. Ritter said health reasons had forced him to step down.
Frattini's acting term is only until next May. An election will be held in April to pick someone to fill the remaining two years of Ritter's term.
Frattini lost by only 3 votes to Ritter in the last citywide election in 2013.
Alderman Ernie Gwaltney had also tried for the job, but Frattini won the vote last night 7-to-1.
