The former athletic director at the University of Northern Iowa wants to take over the same job at SIU-Carbondale.
Rick Hartzell, who was the A.D. in Cedar Falls from 1999 to 2008, interviewed on the Carbondale campus Monday.
Hartzell says he misses the highs and lows of athletic administration. He says his philosophy is athletics should be a family.
Since 2011, Hartzell has run a motivational speaking business, and since 2008 has been chief executive officer and president of a company which focuses on marketing and promotion in the racing industry. He's also a college basketball referee.
