WSIU Public Broadcasting and Carbondale Public Library welcome the second season of Community Cinema with the screening of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
Community Cinema is a series or free monthly film screenings from the PBS series Independent Lens. Each screen will be held at the Carbondale Public Library on the last Saturday of every month at 2:30pm. Screenings begin September 29 and will be held monthly, with the exception of December, through June 2013.
The new season kicks off on Saturday, September 29 at 2:30 pm with Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Discussion facilitators for the September film are Jenn Freitag, Prevention Educator for Rape Crisis Services, Women's Center-Carbondale, and Shannon Lindsay Toth, a doctoral student in Women's Studies at SIU Carbondale. A landmark series based on the book by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide follows celebrity activists as they travel through six countries to meet inspiring individuals confronting oppression and developing meaningful solutions for women and girls through health care, education, and economic empowerment.
Community Cinema is a groundbreaking civic engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service and is designed to brings to light unforgettable stories about unique individuals, underrepresented communities, or pivotal moments in history. Carbondale is among more than 100 cities nationally who are currently participating in the project, which brings together leading organizations, community members, and public television stations to discuss and get involved in key social issues of our time.
