For the first time in school history, the Saluki men's golf team is ranked the number one team in the country according to the Golfweek rankings.
SIU's rating is 67.90. Campbell University is second at 68.11 followed in the top five by Indiana, Missouri and Bowling Green.
The rating system is based on a mathematical formula that uses a player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents.
The Salukis opened the season by winning Indiana University's Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate tournament with a school-record three-round score of 28-under par.
Saluki freshman Matthis Besard was the individual medalist with a nine under par score. That effort earned him the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors.
The Salukis compete in a tournament at the University of Iowa Sunday through Tuesday.
