Williamson County State's Attorney Chuck Garnati says it's time for him to step down.
The long-serving prosecutor told County Board Chairman Ron Ellis Tuesday that he'll resign, effective next Monday morning.
Ellis says Garnati suggested a successor, and he is working with party leaders on consensus for who will fill Garnati's seat.
"The Democratic party is in accord with who the replacement is going to be. As County Chairman, I will be very honored to bring that name forward to a vote for the entire County Board."
Ellis declined to identify the potential new State's Attorney, but said he is an attorney and lives in Williamson County - but does not currently work in Garnati's office.
Williamson County Commissioners will meet Monday morning to formally accept Garnati's resignation.
Ellis says he is prepared to appoint Garnati's successor - the timing of his resignation being too close to November to hold a special election this year:
"It does not meet the requirements for a special election. So he will be appointed. We will have a special Board meeting Monday morning at 8:00 in the morning to accept Chuck's formal resignation, and then we will immediately have a vote."
With no special election, Garnati's successor will serve out the rest of his term, which ends in 2016.
