Phase one is complete, and now the people involved in the restoration of the Buckminster Fuller Dome Home in Carbondale are working towards phase two.
RBF Dome NFP President Jon Davey says Tuesday's ribbon cutting ceremony means the restoration of the exterior of the structure is complete.
"New decking on the dome, a new waterproof roof membrane, and a great paint job with the white representing the sails of a boat and the Tupelo blue representing the sea and the sky - just as Bucky would have it."
Davey says now they're raising money for phase two, which will involve restoring the interior of the home. He says they hope to have the home opened as an interpretive center and museum in honor of Fuller by the fall of 2015.
Carbondale Mayor Don Monty says this will be a unique attraction for the city to promote.
"Unless you know it's here, and come look for it, you're not going to stumble onto it. It's really spectacular when you see it - there's no other house like it in Carbondale, probably no other house like it anywhere around here."
R. Buckminster Fuller and his wife Anne lived in the home from 1960 to 1971 while he taught at SIU-Carbondale.
