Flooding Closes Roads, Damages Structures Across Region

Heavy rains forced evacuations and closed roads across the region over the weekend, and experts say we're not out of the woods yet.

Emergency crews evacuated homes on Saturday, as creeks and streams spilled over their banks and rain continued.

Dozens of students at SIU Carbondale were displaced when floodwaters inundated University Hall on the east side of campus. That facility is now closed for the rest of the semester, and the students are housed in other areas.

The National Weather Service in Paducah reports nearly ten inches of rain fell near Carbondale, with other totals ranging anywhere from three to eight inches across the region.

Roads remain closed in many areas, and emergency managers are asking people to remember never to drive into standing water.
