Fatal Crash Closes Williamson County Highway

One person is dead, and four others injured, after a crash along Illinois Route 148 in Williamson County.Illinois State Police say 62-year old Randall Engleby was driving a semi hauling coal south on the highway when he lost control, and crossed the center line just north of Ogden Road.

The semi forced two pickup trucks in the northbound lanes to swerve off the road to avoid it. The first truck's driver and two passengers, 27-year old Jessica Adams, 22-year old Jacob Morrison, and a juvenile were taken to the hospital with what police call incapacitating injuries. All three are from Cairo.

The second pickup's driver, 53-year old Barbara Holland of Vienna, was also taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Troopers say Engleby's semi crossed both lanes of traffic, and then rolled completely over, spilling its load of coal. Engleby was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Traffic was detoured for more than six hours while crews responded to the crash and cleaned up the coal spill. Investigators say they're still looking into just what caused Engleby to lose control.
