Emergency crews are working to assess the damage after strong storms hit southern Illinois, downing power lines and leaving thousands of electric customers without power.
Authorities in Saline County are asking residents to stay off the streets while emergency workers deal with the storm's aftermath. There are reports of damage in Harrisburg, and the school superintendent there has canceled classes Wednesday.
Ameren Illinois reports that service is out to more than 10,000 customers, including about 6,500 in Saline County. Ameren is also reporting more than 1,200 customers are without power in Union County. Power has been restored to most Ameren customers in Jackson and Williamson Counties as of 7:00am.
