Effingham County Farmer Welcomes Big Guests

Two Asian elephants spent the night at an Illinois farm on their way from California to the East Coast over the weekend. The female elephants, 49-year-old Tai and 31-year-old Rosie, rested up at Effingham County Fair Board President Phil Hartke's family farm east of Teutopolis.

Hartke tells the Effingham Daily News that he received a call early Friday from Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc., a California-based company that provides elephants for various occasions.

He says the elephants stayed in an empty shed on his property. They were hosed down before continuing their journey on Saturday morning.

Tai and Rosie were headed for Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, Mass., where they will be on display for a couple of months.
