Durbin Proposes Legislation in Response to Hobby Lobby Decision

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he’ll introduce legislation to deal with the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision, which he says is wrong.

The decision allows Hobby Lobby, a closely held chain of for-profit arts and crafts stores, to opt out of providing contraceptive coverage as part of the health insurance it offers employees.

This would ordinarily be required under the Affordable Care Act, but the Hobby Lobby owners sued, claiming providing contraception coverage violated their religious beliefs, and the Supreme Court agreed.

Durbin says if that’s the case, workers and job applicants should be warned.

“I’m going to introduce legislation that will require these employers to disclose if they are going to be discriminating against their employees, and reducing the health care options available to the women in their workforce,” he said.

Under his proposal, job applicants would have to be notified as well.

Durbin says the Hobby Lobby decision is wrong, because he doesn’t believe that corporations can have religious beliefs.  He says it’s another example of the Supreme Court treating corporations as people.
