Committee Considering Bill to Urge Illinois Schools to Note Historic Contributons of LGBTQ People

Images

An idea being floated at the statehouse would urge public schools to cover the historic contributions of LGBTQ people.

The school code has already been changed to promote historically marginalized groups like women and African-Americans. The Illinois Family Institute opposes the measure.
Ralph Rivera is with the non-profit and says public schools shouldn't require the teaching of history that goes against many family's "belief systems" ...

"What about those students, what about those families - don't they have protection rights to live out their belief system? That's so important."

Changes have been made to the proposal that would take out language about requiring school districts spend extra money.

A House committee is still debating the proposal.
