Federal authorities say a Carbondale man will spend more than a dozen years in prison on multiple convictions.
The U-S Attorney says 41-year old Kerry Smith pleaded guilty to a five count indictment for conspiracy to distribute marijuana, engaging in an unlawful monetary transaction, concealment of information from the Social Security Administration, and making false statements. Authorities say Smith was involved in a marijuana distribution ring from May of 2001 through December of 2007. They say during that time, in addition to the illegal drug activities, Smith also filed false claims for Social Security benefits and food stamps.
Smith was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years in prison, and will have to pay nearly $850,000 in fines and restitution. He's also ordered to give up eight Carbondale homes, two cars and other personal property.
