The City of Carbondale recently gathered the community's thoughts about architectural design standards for the Downtown area.
City planner Sarah Lawrence says those standards right now are pretty basic. She says they're looking for a more comprehensive vision moving forward, but still want to protect the distinct character of the Preservation District of Downtown Carbondale, including the Town Square.
"There are many of the features that exist on those buildings that would be preserved because of that district. But, then in addition, as new buildings go in, I think that we would look to try to maintain the character, where appropriate. But, think about how that character might transition or change moving south toward SIU."
Lawrence says she is still sorting through the public surveys, but the feedback so far calls for protecting the historical character of Downtown, along with developing standards that will foster creativity in new construction.
She says once all the public comments are compiled, the City of Carbondale will present those findings at a public meeting in about six weeks.
Then, if all goes well, they would propose a revision to the City Code.
