Cahokia Mounds Exhibit Features Southern Illinois

A new exhibit of photographs explores what makes southern Illinois different from the rest of the state.

39 photographs that appeared in the book “The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History”, authored by Herbert Russell, are now on display at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Assistant Site Manager Bill Iseminger says the photos capture what makes southern Illinois seem like a state within a state.

“I think it really points out the difference in the geography and geology of the southern part of Illinois, as well as the history,” Iseminger said. ‘It was an earlier history of settlement predating that of northern Illinois.”

The photos will remain on display through mid-November. There is no admission fee to the exhibit, though the suggested donation is $7 for adults and $15 per family.
