AFSCME Protests IDOC Accusations

Governor Bruce Rauner pledged his support for the Illinois Department of Corrections when he was elected.
But, members of AFSCME say they are waiting to see that support materialize.

Union members held an informational picket Monday outside the Vienna Correctional Center.

A letter from the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections regarding the governor's vision for reform contends prison guards are a big part of the problem for skyrocketing overtime costs.

The department cites the day after the Super Bowl in February as an example of prison workers taking time off for recreational purposes, but AFSCME Local 415 President Michael Turner says that's not the whole story.

Turner says attacks like this from the administration that don't include all the facts bring down the morale of corrections employees.

Department spokesperson Nicole Wilson says the administration has no further comment on the matter at this time.
