Multiple southern Illinois fire departments helped fight a fire at Royal Fiberglass Pools in Dix Monday.  Salem Emergency Management officials say they provided mutual aid along with other fire crews including Jefferson County, Mt. Vernon, Centralia, and Kell. The Fire was reported around 9:30 Monday morning.  


A manhunt in southern Illinois has led the U.S. Forest Service to close part of the Shawnee National Forest.

Illinois State Police say the forest's Lusk Creek Wilderness area is closed until further notice as federal, state and local authorities search for 34-year-old Dracy "Clint" Pendleton. They say anyone entering another part of the forest should be on high alert.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner delivered his second annual state budget address Wednesday before a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly.


Polar Bear is one of Carbondale's biggest party weekend's of the year.    It occurred this past weekend and local hospital officials say the number of ER visits related to the Polar Bear event were up 50% over last year.

The Emergency Department at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale says at least 30-individuals were treated for injuries associated with Polar Bear activities.  Hospital officials say they saw an increase in the number of alcohol-related incidents as well as incidents of assault.


The remains of an airman listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War have been recovered and are being returned to southern Illinois.  The Evansville Courier reports officials with the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the remains of Pfc. Kenneth Leroy Cunningham of Ellery, which is in Edwards County. He went missing in October 1969, when he was 21.

Winter has returned to the quad-state region.  Temperatures remained in the single digits across the region Monday morning.   While high temperatures are expected to reach about 20,  the wind chill remains an issue. Wind chill readings of between -1 and -10 are likely across the region on Monday.  The National Weather Service says frostbite can set in within 30-minutes when skin is exposed to a wind chill of up to -17.

University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe is stepping down.  Wolf's decision follows a special meeting of the system's governing board Monday.  Wolfe says he hopes the school community uses his resignation as a way to ``move forward together.''

City of Carbondale

Carbondale City Manager Kevin Baity is stepping down.

City officials announced his resignation Thursday morning, saying it is a mutual decision that is in the best interest of the City of Carbondale.

A Franklin County man is dead following a three vehicle accident.   Illinois State Police say the crash happened Monday night about 10:30 on Route-14 near Water Road.  Police say two cars were traveling east on Route-14 when one went to pass the other.  The passing vehicle struck a west bound motorcycle.   After hitting the on-coming motorcycle the car then struck the other vehicle it was trying to pass.

Salem Police are warning area residents to be careful when paying at the pump at area gas stations.  Police say credit card skimmers have been successfully used in the area.

Beginning Friday you can catch a Greyhound bus from the Carbondale train station.  Greyhound officials say they are moving their operation to the Amtrak station on South Illinois Avenue. 

Greyhound area manager Deborah Laney says the move will better serve the transportation needs of the Carbondale community. The bus service will offer three daily departures to St. Louis, MO; Champaign, IL; and Atlanta, GA.  Laney says the new location is only a bus stop and travelers must still purchase tickets online at www.greyhound.com.

When Ashley Seering and Cory Byers started gathering stories about heroin addiction and deaths in southern Illinois, the Edwardsville-based filmmakers didn’t realize it would turn into a feature-length documentary.

Heat and humidity will dominant through the weekend.  The National Weather Service says we can expect heat index readings as high as 107 degrees through Sunday. 

With the high heat and humidity it is important to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air conditioned room and check on those more susceptible to the heat.
