SIRIS Volunteer Profile - Amanda Bradley

For someone like Amanda Bradley, SIRIS is an extension of her interests, so becoming a volunteer was a natural step. Originally from Christopher, Illinois, Amanda came to Southern Illinois University Carbondale to pursue a degree in English, which she earned in 2002.
Currently residing in her hometown, she became involved with SIRIS after seeing an announcement at the Carbondale Public Library. Bradley says she was looking for new opportunities to give back to the community and also to maintain her public speaking skills.

When an opportunity arises to get involved in his community, William Eric Hamer is the last person to shy away. For someone like Hamer, the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) is just one of the many ways in which he keeps himself busy and helps to keep his community strong.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Hamer moved to Carbondale in 1965 to attend SIUC where he graduated with a Psychology degree in 1969.

Meet Carbondale local and volunteer reader, Dan Hill. Hill volunteered with a service similar to SIRIS at the University of Virginia where he would read local news for broadcast. "I liked doing that, so when I found out I had a chance to be a reader at SIRIS, I was pretty eager to get back into it," Hill says.
Hill feels that SIRIS's services are a valuable resource to those who are visually impaired and thinks it's great that they have an opportunity to hear local news.

Meet volunteer reader Joan Listen. In 1974, Listen moved to Southern Illinois to attend SIUC and from1975- 1977, she worked at WSIU-TV as an office manager. When Vickie Devenport came on board as the new director of SIRIS, Listen became more familiar with the organization and liked what she heard.

Meet volunteer readers, John and Cheryl Burke Jarvis. The couple recently moved to Southern Illinois in June 2009 from Texas. Cheryl has always listened to NPR/Public Broadcasting wherever she was living. "I'm happy that Carbondale is a big enough town and University to have an NPR station," Cheryl said. "I listen to NPR all the time and that's actually how I heard about SIRIS."
